Market Overview

The Australian art market has witnessed sustained and tremendous growth throughout the last 10 years. This trend is exemplified by secondary auction results by AUD Volume.

The Roar Portfolio

“ROAR” sought to reinvent Australian painting in an expressive, almost explosive way.  Rebellious in nature the movement’s leading artists survived to create extraordinary careers. The Roar group sought to minimize its contact with the established art system while maximizing its progress as an artistic force.

In 1982 a group of art students, still in their teens and early twenties, decided to take matters into their own hands. Rather than pit themselves against the conventions of an established system and lose, they challenged it by rejecting its means and methods.

The group established its own artist-run gallery in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, and relatively quickly, gallery directors approached Roar members, who one-by-one were recruited into their more established stables.

The Roar name was coined to make the system stop and take notice and involved a stylistic pun. Playing on the words “raw” and “roar” these artists made noise about their work which was raw with youth and energy. Generally each artist’s style was figurative, linking it less with its time than with other, earlier Australian groups and European movements.

Waiting for the appropriate 20 years or so until their work was sufficiently ‘mature’, pieces by these artists today are being quickly taken up by the art market.

  • Mark Schaller has a distinctive, vigorous and expressionistic style. He is well regarded by his peers and steadily collected by private collectors.

In his own words:  "I sort of do the work for myself. That's how you can paint pictures. It gets boring for you, if you don't do it for yourself. Everything else becomes irrelevant; there's no one to tell you what's right or wrong. You can be irrational or rational, emotional or not emotional, sober or conservative”.

Schaller has an abundant curiosity, and is highly inventive in his selection of materials and work practices. Besides his paintings, his latest focus has been limited edition print work.

Polystyrene has been one of the unusual inspirations behind Schaller's current print works - created through a process of dripping "turps" on to the material, which naturally eats deeply into the base.

Schaller came up with this unusual process after spending several months studying traditional print-making methods at Fitzroy's Port Jackson Press.

The results produced are unique combinations of his famous expressive, colourful style and the high quality prints of Port Jackson Press.

Schaller has an already impressive and growing secondary market for a mid-career contemporary artist.

Highest price achieved at auction was $9,775.00 at Christies in 2000 against an estimate of $4000-5000.

Prices on the primary market are still attractive for his limited edition print work, and have hit the high $20,000’s for oils.

Schaller studied fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in his late teens after part-studying film and other visual art courses. And today, he still studies life-drawing weekly.

He became a founding member of the renowned Roar studios in the early 1980's, and sold his first painting at 18 during an early Roar Studio show in Prahran.

Career highlights have included successful solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas as well as acquisition of his paintings and prints by major Institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia.

From an art market perspective, Schaller is regarded as a very strong mid career artist, who has continued to build a significant career for the past decade, continuing to challenge himself to make art that is passionate and relevant to contemporary culture.

David Larwill is one of the most important artists from the last couple of decades.  As the spokesperson of ROAR artists, he has had profound influence on the direction of Australian art from the 1980’s onwards.

His imagery, created in a naive style, references tribal art and graffiti. The creation of his unashamedly, bright and vibrant imagery has been extraordinarily popular in the broader art market.

The etchings of Larwill have been created in conjunction with leading printmakers, Port Jackson Press.   His reputation has since developed as one of the most beautiful printmakers in Australia.

Institutionally, Larwill has achieved national representation as well as attracting serious collectors and impressive auction records. His imagery has broad appeal with markets expanding offshore.

Top Price at Auction is $83,000 against an est. of $55-75,000 at Deutscher-Menzies 2004. A relatively young artist to have a track record with a top price and excellent consistency in backup in secondary sales speaks volumes.  The recent high prices to some extent brings him into line with other leading contemporary artists such as Maguire and Moffat”   - Mark Fraser, Sotheby’s.

"Larwill over the next 5 – 10 years will rise dramatically…There is a good book on him; he is collected by older collectors who already have sound collections of the Moderns (Blackman, Boyd, Tucker etc) as well as the younger collectors who are only starting to put collections together now. He seems to me to be a very good sound artist to invest in or just to enjoy”  - David Cook, Christies.

"Artists with room to move in the market:...David Larwill.”   - Michael Reid, The Daily Telegraph, July 2004.

Pasquale Giardino b.1961-

The works of Pasquale:  Left     Skipping Girl, 2004  Pastel on Paper 76.2cm x 38cm

Center    Dragons diptych.  Pastel and collage on paper 2 x 20cm x76.2cm

                                          Right     6 O'Clock Swill,  Collins Street.  Pastel on Paper 76.2cm x 28cm

Pasquale also has a distinct and vibrant style. His work reflects suburban pop culture, and he frequently accesses diverse media such as collage and a simplistic almost childlike style.

Pasquale “Paski” Giardino was a founding member of the Roar group of artists. His work is busy, impatient, colourful, naïve and intuitive with a brilliant dash of humour.

His well honed gift of observation of the banal and the everyday, married with an insatiable interest in ancient mythology, brings his paintings to life. In a blaze of vibrant colour and bold shapes, they tell stories that are animated, humorous, chaotic and sometimes menacing, but which are always engaging.

This series of original crayon, pastel and collage on paper are typical examples of his work. Still well under priced for a major artist from the Roar group- Pasquale’s only recent rediscovery means expected high returns for early investors in his works- particularly for original pieces.

Pasquale is represented in numerous private and puplic collections including National gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art gallery of NSW, Artbank.
